A Brief History Of Nose Piercing

Your nose may be the most important part of your face. Okay, maybethat’s your eyes. However even if your eyes are the most functionalpart of your face, your nose is the most prominent. It’s the mostobvious of them all. It is your nose that sets the character anddefines your entire face. It is no surprise that a nose piercing canaccentuate your face positively. Nostril piercing can be one of themost attractive of all the facial piercings. You’ve probablyconsidered a nose piercing before but have you ever wondered what thehistory of nose piercing is? Well, it’s time for a short historylesson!

Nose piercing is over 4,000 years old. It started in the middle east and was even mentioned in the Bible. Over time, different people from around the world have graced themselves with beautiful nose rings.

Nose Bones for Piercings

Nose bones were used as nose piercing jewelry in ancient times. Itwas a part of the nomadic tribes of Barber and Beja. Barber was anAfrican tribe whole Beja was an ancient tribe of the Middle East.Nose rings were used by families as gifts, and the size of the ringusually represented the wealth of the family. The husband gives hisbride a nose ring after their marriage. This ring was said torepresent financial security in the event of divorce.

During the 16thcentury, the tradition was brought to India all the way from theMiddle East. The Mughal emperors were responsible for introducing theculture to India. It was either a stud or ring in India. This studnose ring was worn in the left nostril even if both nostrils werepierced. The left nostril was preferred because it is associated withthe reproductive parts of the female body…

The Punk movement adopted the tradition in the year 1970 to symbolize rebellion against conservative values. (Conservative people being the establishment who didn’t support their faux-anarchist attitudes.) Early on, there were so many things that a person should consider before getting a nose ring – things like potential employment and parenting choices affected people’s decision to get a nose ring.

In recent times, nose piercing has gradually become more socially acceptable than itused to be. Many members of society have embraced nose piercing. Itis no longer considered deviant in many parts of the developed world.Celebrities like Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Slash from Guns and Rose,Sinead O’Connor and so many others have nostril piercings. Morepeople are seen with little gem-topped hoops, studs, and many otherbeautiful piercings in different parts of society from hospitals toshopping malls.

Nose piercing haschanged over the years as people have changed their views about nosepiercings. Thankfully society can now begin to accept more and morestyles of piercing as we become more open.
