Men and women have used jewelry as a status symbol and also for beautification according to the annals of history. From wearing small pearls signifying tears of mourning in Victorian England to the wearing of a band to indicate a person is married – septum piercing jewelry represents the opposite end of the scale.
Today many people wear pieces of jewelry in different pierced body parts without knowing the significance or history behind it. The ear is the most common part of the body pierced for the purpose of wearing jewelry. The piercing of the septum is certainly growing to approach this level of popularity, whereas before it was barely seen. The love for wearing septum nose rings was mainly practiced by many Northern American Indian tribes, although now it has spread to other countries around the world. The Shawnee leaders like Tecumseh and the peoples of the Solomon Islands and New Guinea sported septum rings as well. People of the Asmat tribe of Irian Jaya used large thick bone plugs as septum jewelry, made from tibia bones of enemies killed in wars or the leg bones of pigs.
Piercing the septum can have a lot of significance based on the culture and the wearer. Wearing a bone in the septum was for a fierce appearance. Aboriginals used septum piercings to beautify by using a long bone to flatten the nose. Septum rings are especially popular among warrior cultures.
Historically, the age for piercing differs in different cultures, which can be as early as the age of nine. Most North American Tribes see the ring as a rite of passage after a successful return from a soul-searching journey in the wilderness. The septum piercing was used to signify their success and show their rite of passage into manhood.
Later on, in history, the piercing of these flesh tunnels became connected to rebel subcultures such as the punk rock movement, is seen as a sign of rebellion. But now virtually everybody is following the piercing trend. Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Rihanna and a host of others are joining the septum piercing crowd. However, in place of the woods, bones and other things used by the tribes who originated it rings made of nickel-free gold, platinum, silver or surgical steel are most commonly used. They prefer smaller and less obvious rings instead of the big ones used by the old tribes.
These septum rings or piercings might be in fashion right now but bear in mind that before now they belonged to a rich, ancient culture. It was a way of life for them and it’s always good to respect the rich history involved.
