All information about the septum piercing

Piercings come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re already pierced or not, extra information about body jewelry never hurts. That’s why Piercing Mania covers all piercing types in a separate article. You might already have read something about the septum piercing in the blog ‘All information about piercing’, this blog will cover the septum piercing a bit more extensive.

Like many other piercing types, the septum piercing is an old piercing type with no clear origin. Although many historical stories cover nose piercings, it isn’t always clear whether they mean a septum or nostril piercing. Just like the nostril piercing the septum piercing carries a social meaning, especially in older cultures. One of those messages is that a septum piercing means that someone is married. These references, however, do not apply in western civilization as the septum piercing is considered nothing more than a fashion statement.

Getting a septum piercing

Contrary to what some might think, the septum piercing doesn’t pierce the cartilage partition (which is called the septum) in your nose. Although practiced by some extreme piercing fanatics most septum piercings are placed through the soft part of skin below the cartilage partition, also known as ‘the sweet spot’. Actually piercing the partition is possible but comes with a very high risk of complications.

The septum is mostly placed with a thickness of 1.2 mm up to a maximum of 2 mm. It is a possibility to stretch the septum piercing (you could roughly stretch up 1 mm a month) up to a size of 8 mm thick. Any bigger than that will most likely result in discomfort as it starts to hit against the septum.

Healing a septum piercing takes somewhere from 6 up to 10 weeks. Since you pierce ‘the sweet spot’ the septum piercing isn’t considered to be that painful.

Which type of piercing to wear in a septum piercing?

Once you got your septum piercing you are going to want to some striking jewelry, but what to wear? Besides the very specific septum piercings, there are other options. The circular barbell and the ball closure ring are the most popular. These rings are comfortable to wear and are clearly visible. It creates the most striking effect. Other options are buffalo tapers, twister tapers, and segment rings. Although they are not as common or popular they are still a proper option.

Another option, simple straight barbells. This might seem as a cool idea but in reality they are often rarely visible. Even worse, the balls on either end of the barbell are easily mistaken for nasal mucus.

If you want to temporarily hide your septum piercing you can always turn a circular barbell inside your nose. As the balls rest against your nostril the piercing will be as good as invisible. Not very comfortable though, but an easy and quick fix. If you want to hide your piercing for a longer period it would be best to use a retainer.
