Basic information about the belly button piercing

Body jewelry comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether its your first piercing or one of many if never hurts to have a little more information. Here we will discuss one of most popular piercings, the belly button piercing.

Basic information about the belly button piercing

It might seem obvious there is more to a belly button piercing than that it ‘just goes through your belly button’, and usually the piercing is taken just above the belly button and goes through the skin between the belly button and the belly. In some cases the piercing is made through the belly button and actually sticks out of the belly button. Because most people have belly button that is deeper than the belly itself the first option is preferred.

In some cases the belly button simply isn’t suitable for a piercing. Don’t worry, the professional piercer will give you advice when needed about individual cases. An example of this is when the belly button is too deep, this creates too much tension to the skin around the belly button. This may cause irritation and makes the healing process more difficult because the skin is under too much pressure. Too much pressure around the piercing can also be caused by scar tissue or too much weight around the piercing.

General information about the belly button piercing

It is difficult to determine the history of  the belly button piercing and there is no clear indication of when it first became fashionable. But it is generally assumed that the belly button piercing is a relatively new kind of piercing, not like the ancient old nose piercing for instance. Despite its missing history, it is clear that in the western world the belly button piercing has risen in popularity amongst women. The piercing itself can be divided into three types.

Firstly you have a piercing with a bar and two balls. The ball at the bottom is usually decorated with a stone or a figure. This is a more subtle type of belly button piercing.

The second type is where the hanging part of the piercing is suspended from the ball at the bottom. The size of the hanger can vary and differs in length, and often sits on the stomach, which creates a more striking appearance.

Finally you have the ‘reverse’ belly button piercing. This type sits upwards rather than downwards making the rod less visible. This piercing sits higher than the others, which creates a more elegant look.
