Can You Get Double Helix Piercings at the Same Time?

A double-helix refers to two consecutive holes pierced vertically in the cartilage areas of your ear. Double-helix piercings are very popular as they are eye-catching, and you can jazz them up with a wide variety of jewelry. Plus, they’ll complement any other visible piercings you may have.

If you’re thinking about adding a double-helix to your look, it’s best to do your research first. As with any type of piercing, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into and what to expect. This is especially true for the double-helix, as it’s essentially two completely separate piercings.

Can You Get Both Helix Piercings Together?

First thing’s first: Yes, you can get a double-helix piercing done at the same time. In fact, it’s recommended considering the healing time of cartilage piercings (more on that later!)

What You Should Know Beforehand

With a double-helix, you have the options of going “standard” or “forward.” The standard double-helix is positioned at the top, posterior section of your cartilage. The forward double-helix would be positioned directly across on the front part of your cartilage, just above the tragus.

If you’re unsure of the double-helix, you can always start with just a single-helix. If you’re feeling daring, you can go for a triple-helix. Regardless of which you choose, here are some things you need to consider carefully before jumping into the piercer’s chair:

Think About Placement

The first thing you need to think about is where you want your double-helix and how practical the area is. No two ears are the same, and you may fancy a forward double-helix only to find that your cartilage in that area isn’t pronounced enough to accommodate the piercing.

If you have other piercings in the same ear where you would like your double-helix to go, you’ll also have to consider how much distance is needed between them. The last thing you want is for your jewelry to overlap and get caught on other pieces. You also need to ensure there’s enough space to clean the area properly.

Your piercer should be able to help you determine the best and safest placement for your double-helix.

Consider the Healing Time

The amount of healing time for piercings varies upon the individual. Cartilage is much thicker than your earlobes and takes significantly longer to heal. Your double-helix piercing’s standard healing time can take anywhere from four to six months—with proper care.

However, in most cases, cartilage piercings will take up to a year to heal, even with the appropriate hygiene.

Properly Caring for Your Piercing

A piercing such as the double-helix is quite a commitment considering its healing time and aftercare. Your piercer should instruct you on how to clean and care for your new piercing. They also may provide you with a cleaning kit to get you started, or advise you on how to make a suitable cleaning solution.

The best aftercare product I’ve personally used is the After Inked Piercing Aftercare Spray. Not only is it vegan, but it’s also completely alcohol and additive-free. The solution works well on all skin types including sensitive skin, and it comes in a generously-sized mist-spraying bottle for easy application. When using it from the very start of the healing process, the spray helps to decrease healing times and aims to eliminate any lingering pain or soreness.

You’ll also need to avoid the following:

  • Constantly twisting and playing with your piercing
  • Touching your piercing with unwashed hands
  • Sleeping on the same side as your pierced ear
  • Removing the jewelry before the healing process is complete

Additionally, be aware of your hair and shampoo products as they can leave behind oils, residues, and build-up, which can irritate your piercings. To help speed up the healing process, it’s a good idea to incorporate more vitamin C and zinc into your diet as well.

Find a Reputable Piercer

We cannot emphasize this enough: Finding a reputable and certified piercer is the most important thing to think about before getting a double-helix piercing, or any type of piercing for that matter.

A professional and experienced piercer with a good track record makes all the difference when it comes to your safety—and the end result of your piercing. Once you’ve narrowed down a place, it’s a good idea to stop in and check it out.

Talk to your potential piercer to make sure you feel comfortable with them. A good piercer will walk you through the entire process of what to expect, as well as examine the area you want to pierce to make sure it’s viable before anything else happens. This is the time to ask as many questions as possible.

Don’t forget to take a look around their studio to ensure it’s a clean environment and that their certificates and other necessary qualifications are openly displayed.

Final Words on the Double-Helix Piercing

Double-helix piercings will never go out of style—they’re just too unique! Whether you have other piercings or not, a double-helix will fit right in without being too loud. Best of all, you can have it done in just one visit.
