Cleaning Body Jewelry: An Unexpected Art Form

Cleaning body jewelry is essential to good health. There is a small cast of characters in this sterilized play; namely anti-bacterial soap and alcohol-free mouthwash. These two elements work to prevent bacterial infections and help to keep that trinket shiny and new wherever it happens to live on your person.

Wash your hands thoroughly with plain anti-bacterial soap before handling your body jewelry. Then wash the piece of jewelry in warm water for about 2 to 3 minutes. Re-insert into your body part immediately or if that part is otherwise occupied, store it in a sealed bag to avoid further contamination.

In the case of oral piercings, antiseptic or alcohol-free mouthwash will also help to kill germs and sanitize the jewelry. Soak for a few minutes.

Avoid standard cleaning products and chlorine because they can damage gold and gemstones. Remember to store pieces in a soft pouch when they aren’t being worn. With pearls and porous stones such as lapis, rubies, emeralds, coral and turquoise, do not use jewelry cleaners. Instead, wipe them clean with a soft damp cloth.

Take care of your jewelry and it will shine on for you.
