Gentlemen, it’s time to GROW UP.
Why, you ask?
Because you’re not still studying for the PSAT’s.
But here’s a better reason, which may surprise you.
Men who dress like men have more fun.
Want to be treated better? Want more attention from women?
Then STOP dressing like a kid.
Maybe you think you don’t dress like a kid, but if you have any of these items in your closet, the people around you probably think you do.
Today I’m going to tell you which items make you look childish and how to upgrade them so you can start dressing like the man you know yourself to be.
What’s the first item to upgrade when you want to dress like a man? Look down at your feet…
#1. Running Shoes
Sorry, guys. I know a lot of you love your cross trainers, but wearing running shoes when you’re not actually running makes you look like a school boy.
Upgrading these can be as simple as going with a solid-colored sneakerin white, black, or gray. You have plenty of options.
I would recommend stepping your shoe game up a bit further. Look for a pair ofcasual boots(stitched, not glued) made out of an eye-catching material such as blue suede.
Why stop there? Take it up another notch and bring in a pair of casual dress shoes, such asloafers, wingtips or double monks. When you wear those, you’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd.
#2. Shorts And Blue Jeans
Historically, shorts have been seen as a boy’s garment, with a first pair of long trousers often serving as a rite of passage for young men. In many parts of the world, grown men do not wear shorts.
I love a good pair of dark blue jeans, but they should not be your only option when it comes to casual trousers. Men wear blue jeans. Boys live in them.
So what are your upgrade options for summer casual wear? How about a pair of linen orlightweight cotton trousers?Lightweight chinos are very breathable and much more stylish than shorts.
What about alternatives to blue jeans in the fall and winter? Tryheavyweight chinos.They’re just as tough as blue jeans. If you can’t part with your jeans, why notbring some color into them?Try black, green, white, or even red. Or try a corduroy. You’re not short on options here, gentlemen.
I’m not saying you can’t wear shorts and blue jeans, but it’s time to expand your trouser wardrobe if they’re all you’ve got. Start experimenting with different fabrics and colors.
#3. Graphic T-Shirts
Ditch the graphic tees and find somecasual button-downsorpolos. Anything with a collar and some buttons in the front will flatter most body types better than a t-shirt.
Yeah, graphic tees are trendy and often funny, but if they’re the only type of shirt in your wardrobe, it’s time to level up. Trysolid-colored casual button-downsinstead. If you don’t have an ideal physique, find some shirts with epaulets to build up your shoulders and some pockets to build up your chest.
If you have a thin build, an oversized T-shirt is just going to make you look skinny. But a well-fitted button-down with sleeves rolled to the elbows will actually make you look more muscular.
#4. Baseball Caps
I hate to break it to you, gentlemen, but your little league days are well behind you. Save your baseball cap for yard work or the big game and go for something more elegant when wearing a hat out.
Not sure where to start? Try the trilby, perhapsa straw panamaif it’s summer or you live in a warm climate. Let’s upgrade your headgear.
The easiest way to do this is to focus in on the hat’s function. Buy a hat that’s comfortable and fits you well. Practice wearing it so you can build your confidence, especially if you’re new to hats. Confidence is key.
You may find classic hat styles are not for you, and that’s fine. Just don’t be afraid to try something new.

#5. Hoodies
Ditch the hoodie and upgrade to a casual jacket. Again, you’ve got several options.
Let’s start with the bomber jacket,available in leather or suede. What you’re looking for is something that’s going to complement your casual clothing and look great on you. A darker solid color is often a good option, but paler colors can also look great. Change it up.
Have a look at trucker jackets as well. This is the classic denim jacket, but that doesn’t mean you should just stick to blue. They come in a wide variety of colors. Again, I like solid, dark tones because they complement most body types.
And of course I need to mention the sports jacket. A sports jacket might be a little bit too dressy for some of you guys but I think all of you should at least try it out because it’s so versatile. You can dress it up or down quite easily. A sports jacket goes equally wellwith jeansas with dress trousers. No matter how you wear it, you set yourself apart from the crowd when you do.
#6. Backpacks
Boys wear backpacks. Men carry briefcases.
Just kidding. I love a great backpack. But my point is, it’s a good idea toinvest in a nice simple briefcase,especially if you want yourself taken seriously in the business world. You may want something smaller, like an attaché case, or perhaps something a bit larger for your day-to-day carry, like a satchelor messenger bag. If you often carry documents that needprotection, look for a bag with more of a shape to it, maybe something large enough to carry a laptop as well.
Don’t be afraid to go beyond the backpack and invest in someclassic leather luggage, which is timeless in style and design. If it’s good quality, it will serve you for decades.
#7. Clip-On Ties
Boys wear clip-on ties. Men know how to tie both a necktie and a bow tie.
Learn at least a few basic knots, like the four-in-hand and the half and full Windsor. Check out my guide to classic tie knotshere.
#8. Sweats And Tracksuits
Boys wear sweats and tracksuits and think they’re wearing a “suit”. They’re wrong. Save those for the gym or lounging at home.
Men wear wool suits, and onesuit is king in a man’s wardrobe: theclassic worsted wool suit.
A man also needs to know the style pyramid – fit, fabric, and function.
- Fit.If the suit doesn’t fit you, have it tailored or buy one that does.
- Fabric.Focus on getting the best that you can afford. If you have a tight budget you may have to compromise here. I understand that, but once you’ve saved some money, upgrade the suit.
- Function.Does the suit serve your needs? Is it classic in design? Don’t buy something that’s trendy. Go for a classic suit cut that will still be in style a decade from now.
My point? A tracksuit, no matter how much it costs, will not command respect. A well-fitted, classic suit will.
#9. Baggy Clothes
Boys wear clothing that’s too large for them. Men wear clothing that fits. Not sure how clothing ought to fit? Learn to dress for your body type.
When I was a kid, my mom always bought me clothing that was a little too big for me. “You’ll grow into it,” she would say. Guys, you’re past that point. Buy clothing for the body you have now. Don’t wear clothes that are oversized, thinking you’re going to bulk up or keep growing. Find what fits you now.
If you’re used to baggy shirts and jeans, fitted clothing may feel a bit unfamiliar at first. You may confuse that with discomfort. Unfamiliar is not uncomfortable. You’re just not used to it.
Get an outside opinion from a few people. Take a friend or your lady shopping with you. Try clothing that fits you. Go to a tailor.He can adjust not only your suits and sports jackets but also your casual button-downs and jeans.
Once you start wearing clothing that fits, you’ll be surprised at how good you look. Check yourself in the mirror regularly. You’ll like what you see if it includes well-tailored clothing.
