Although the tradition of wearing wedding rings date
back to Ancient Egyptian times, in the US, ceremonies where the couple
exchanged rings weren’t very common until the 1900s. Prior to this period, only
women typically wore a wedding ring to commemorate the marriage. However, with
the First World War, soldiers began to wear rings to remember their loved ones
while they were away and eventually this turned into the tradition of men
wearing wedding rings as we know it today.

For most couples, wedding rings are often the first
piece of jewelry that they choose together and it’s the symbol of your marriage
and commitment to each other. However, choosing the right wedding rings can be
tricky. You may each have different tastes or requirements, and this can
influence the type of rings you eventually buy. But the question that most
couples ask is:

Do our wedding rings have to match, or can we choose
different bands?

Let’s take a look at this question and the three main
routes you can take when selecting your wedding bands.

#1 – Matching Bands: For the traditional couple

Couple's matching wedding bands

This is the most traditional way to go about this. Purchasing
a matching set of wedding bands signifies the following:

  • It’s symbolic of your unity and
represents how you’re each a part of a whole.
  • It indicates that you have
traditional values and take part in these.
  • It symbolises your similarity in
thinking, tastes and style, which indicates that you’re a perfect match.

Such symbolism is perfect for a couple about to embark
on a new chapter together and is appealing for many young people. This is why
matching bands is the most popular option when it comes to wedding rings.

If you want to go one step further, you can opt to have a trio bridal set, which includes a matching engagement ring as well, like this 14k yellow gold trio set. This makes it easier to look for matching rings as all the work has already been done for you.

#2 – Different Bands: For the non-conforming
couple

Different wedding bands

This is the non-traditional
option that’s increasing in popularity. In today’s world, where individuality
and personality are highly valued, this symbolizes:

  • You’re both different and have your individuality
yet you can work together as a pair.
  • You’re secure in your love and trust for each other.
  • You both value independence and treading your own
    path.

Choosing your own wedding
bands not only demonstrates your individuality, but it’s also a practical
option. There’s no need to feel pressure when shopping as you can opt for what
suits you best, as per your appearance and lifestyle. For example, if you spend
a lot of time working with heavy machinery, you might opt for a silicone
wedding band, while your partner might go for the traditional gold band. In the
same way, you can choose a metal color that suits your skin tone like yellow
gold for tan or dark skin.

This option gives you and
your partner a lot of versatility and flexibility. However, make sure that the
both of you are on the same page about choosing completely different rings to
avoid ill-feeling and disappointment.

Complementary Bands: For the perfect compromise

Complementary wedding bands

Complementary bands are wedding bands that look good
together and have similar elements, but don’t totally match. It’s a compromise
between mixing and matching. This is perfect for the couple that want a little
similarity in their rings without resorting to completely matching bands. This
kind of bands symbolize:

  • You’re individual beings with a lot
in common making you perfect for each other.
  • You value independence and
non-conformity but you also value tradition.
  • You have similar tastes.

For complementary wedding bands, choose common design
elements that link the two rings together, while still keeping them different.
There are many ways that this could be done. For example, you could choose two
rings of the same metal color but with completely different designs. Another
option is to opt for the same engraving on both rings which would tie two
totally different rings together. Similar finishes, patterns, colors, metal and
design elements are all ways to link two different rings and show the
similarity between them.

Take a look at some opinions expressed by our readers:

Tilly: I think mismatched rings are more common than matched rings. We loved the contrast of our different rings and how it represented our totally unique styles!

Aubrey: Our rings were completely different because he needed something he could wear at his workshop and I loved rose gold. So he ended up with a silicone band and I bought my shiny rose gold set. It’s an indication of how we work together to find solutions as a whole.

Jordan: I’ve always been very traditional, so it was important to me that our rings matched perfectly. I wanted it to symbolize that we were one. I understand not everyone will see it that way, but for us it was a big deal.

As you can see, there’s arguments that can be made for
all three options listed above. At the end of the day, it comes down to what
matters to you and your partner, what you value and what you prefer. There’s
really no right or wrong answer.
