The birthstone for the month of February, the amethyst is a type of quartz and the stone is identified based upon its long crystals. All of these crystals have six different sides on the ends, but they are only capable of showing their true colors on the tip of the crystal. Even though there are various colors that the stone can come in, it is typically only identified as being purple. The amethyst has been found in Maine, North Carolina, Brazil and Mexico to name a few locations.
