"Gem of the Sun": A History of the Peridot | CHURINGA Diamond

August is the month of the gentle healer….and by that, we mean, Peridot, The August birthstone.

This gem has a humble, but fierce lime green hue and tends to be associated peace, well-being, and happiness. Peridot has an extensive history with ancient papuri records dating the stone to 1500. Egyptians referred to it as “Gem of the Sun” and has been mined in Egypt for over 3,500 years. In fact, despite popular belief, the gems worn by Queen Cleopatra were Peridots, and not emeralds. There are also biblical references of the August gemstone found in the bible where it is referred to as “pitdah,” its Hebrew name.

But perhaps one of the most incredible aspects of the Peridot is the mythical powers that it has been imbued with over the centuries. Egyptian priests believed that Peridot embodied forces of nature and was used to communicate with their Gods. Mined from the caves of the Red Sea Island of Zabargad, which has been the source of the gigantic stones, the Peridot stone has found a home in some of the world’s most esteemed museums. In ancient times, the stones were used for carved talismans and the island’s people were forced to collect them for the Pharoah’s treasury. Nighttime was best to collect stones because of their radiance. Legend has it that island trespassers were put to death.

There is no doubt that the tales of the healing powers of the Peridot spread throughout the  civilized world over time. During the crusades, it was not uncommon for crusaders to confiscate loads of precious stones ( including the Peridot) and using them to adorn their churches and holy ornaments.

Fast forward to the 1960s, prior to a coup d’etat that left the country a totalitarian state that was controlled by its army Burma became one of the world’s strongest producers of Peridot stone. The country is still in an economic depression and the country’s stones are not what they used to be.

Today, the rumors of the August birthstone’s mystical powers still persist.  As it is believed to heal the lungs, spleen, intestines, lymph nodes, and breast ailments. Healers have also believed that it can be an effective remedy for sinus problems, eye trouble, and liver infections. It is also said the elevate confidence and self-esteem.
