How Can I Wear Jewellery When I Want To Wear It? And How To Accessorize When You Hate Wearing Jewelry?

How Can I Wear Jewellery When I Want To Wear It?

How To Start Wearing Jewellery When You Don’t Know Where To Start

Find Your Comfort Zone

You’re not used to wearing jewelry, so you will want to start with one category. Pick what you think you would feel most comfortable wearing, just to start: rings, earrings, bracelets, or necklaces. And begin with basic metals: gold, silver, rose gold, or gunmetal. These basic colors act as neutrals and work with virtually everything.

Start Small

Whatever category you decide to start with, begin with small items in terms of scale. For example, if the category you’ve decided to start with is earrings, start by wearing either a pair of small studs or thin hoop earrings. Alternatively, if the category you’ve made up your mind to begin with is bracelets, try a thin pull-string bracelet or a stretch bracelet that is easy to put on and take off. If necklaces are the category that you’ve picked, try something small, like a chain pendant. And last but not least, if you’ve hand-picked the rings category (pun intended), try an adjustable thin ring so that you can play with wearing it on different fingers.

Make It A Habit

Since wearing jewelry is not something you’re used to, it may feel a little odd at first. You’re exploring new territory so you may consciously pay more attention to it on your body than you should. You might feel the weight of the earrings, or you may find the ring to be cumbersome. The necklace might tangle with your hair a bit. The level of annoyance you may feel from your bracelet moving around your skin might be over the top. But you must understand that these feelings will go away. It’s just your body adjusting to new things. What you have to do is make the unfamiliar become familiar. How you do this is where the jewelry every day for 21 days, the minimum amount of days it is proven to break your habit. Behavior changes through the repetition of an idea. I mean it, even if you’re going to the grocery store, put it on! Even if you’re at home all day, wear it. Now is a good time during quarantine to develop new habits. That might sound absurd but trust me this is one of the most important steps of the process.

Gradually Add Layers

Now that you’re accustomed to wearing jewelry on a certain part of your body, you’re ready for the next step: layering categories. For example, if you’ve been experimenting with earrings in the last several weeks, keep those babies on and add a bracelet or two. If you’ve been sporting a cute necklace in the last little while, add some rings. Wear these added categorical layers for another 21 days. By then you will start feeling a lot more comfortable. If you’re ready to take it to the next level after these 21 days, try moving to the next round adding the 3rd category, and so forth.

Keep Your Jewellery Organized

The most challenging part about wearing jewelry is keeping it organized. If your jewelry is left unorganized, unable, or difficult to find, you will not be inclined to wear it. You’ll just fall back into the temptation of leaving home without it. But you’ve committed to wearing jewelry now since it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, so why not make it easier for yourself by keeping it neatly organized and visible. There are many ways to organize your jewelry and to be honest, I could write another blog about it which I probably will provide there’s demand for it; but to start, and to keep it simple at the beginning, get yourself a medium-size jewelry box with compartments and keep it on your dresser. If you don’t want to purchase a jewelry box, use an empty shoebox or tray. Use plastic zip lock bags to separate your items so that they don’t tangle or knock each other. The main thing is to remember to always put your jewelry back in the spot from which you took it.

What Should I Consider Before Buying Jewelry?

Your Budget

You can buy stud earrings for $10 or $100. Regardless of price, you will want to ensure that the jewelry you’re purchasing is nickel-free. If you’re buying something cheap and chic, be open to the fact that it may (or may not) tarnish on you in time. You can still find cheap and chic jewelry that is longer lasting. Keep in mind that if you’re just playing with the idea of wearing jewelry right now, staying committed to seeing if it’s something you want to marry for life, the option for cheap and chic might be okay before you decide to invest in something a little more expensive.

Mixing Metals

This was always considered taboo. Style has become a lot more eclectic than it used to be. A lot of women still like to keep the jewelry all in one tone: so, for example,if they’re wearing silver earrings, any other jewelry pieces they put on must be silver metal. That’s a classic girl trait and it’s perfectly okay. If you want to mix your metal colors that’s okay too, but it still requires a certain type of story-making. For example, if you’re wearing silver earrings and a rose gold bracelet, add a silver ring to complete the story so that it all works. Or if you’re wearing a gold necklace, wear earrings that have a mix of silver and gold so that the storyline is continued.

Your Outfit Matters

At a more intermediate level, the jewelry you decide to wear will somewhat be determined by your outfit. The color, neckline, length, cut, silhouette, texture, pattern, print, and other accessories in the mix such as shoes and handbags all determine what type of jewelry will look best. When wearing jewelry to match an outfit, you’re in a sense painting a picture and therefore balance plays an integral part. For this reason, jewelry styling really requires a scenario by scenario vantage point. Having said that, I can here provide some basic rules of the game. Keep in mind however that while this is a start, these so-called rules can be broken when necessary, and sometimes should be. But we can get into that in another blog post.

How To Accessorize When You Hate Wearing Jewelry?

Today I feel like I’m letting you guys all in on a secret I’ve been keeping for years. Here it goes – I hate wearing jewelry.

As someone that enjoys fashion as much as I do, I feel like it’s almost blasphemous to say this but in all honesty ( year of truths for me) over the course of these past few years, I’ve found myself wearing less and less jewelry. When a friend of mine pointed out that I seem to not wear any jewelry at all, not even earrings, I realized that I just don’t find jewelry comfortable.

It all started with an allergic reaction to cheap earrings I had in college that infected my ears, which then led to me giving up bracelets when I start out in the corporate world because they would clank on my desk when I typed, to me just never reaching toward my jewelry ever again. The thing is, I’m certain that there have to be other women out there in the world that like me, don’t find jewelry all that comfortable.

So how have I found a way to accessorize and make my outfits pop without traditional jewelry? It’s actually a lot simpler than you think! Embellished collared sweaters, like the one I’m wearing, are a great way to get that necklace look without the heavy chains involved. A ton of designer and department store brands are hopping on the embellished collar bandwagon these days.

If you are looking to stand out in other ways, embrace bold prints. I’ve never felt very comfortable in pants and prefer to wear skirts & dresses. Over the past year, I’ve really started to embrace prints (like this outfit, and this outfit) as a way to make a bold statement with my outfits.

Third, never underestimate the power of a great handbag. I tend to favor satchel styles in a variety of deep jewel-tone colors. I’m a bit of a packrat so I’m always carrying a world of things in my bags to get me through the day. I’ve recently embraced the backpack life and have been alternating between this higher-end model for more professional days and this larger backpack from amazon that’s equally amazing.

For 2020, I challenge all of you to embrace what makes you comfortable and what brings you joy. Fashion is a personal choice, one that deserves to embrace everyone’s choice.

3 Best Ways To Accessorize Without Jewelry

We all know what jewelry can do for an outfit, but what if the jewelry isn’t an option? How can you still make your outfit look glamorous? Often in the mornings, I find myself rushing out the door! I constantly find myself forgetting that one piece of statement jewelry that would tie my whole outfit together. I am going to share with you some simple and easy tricks to add glam to your outfit and learn to accessorize without jewelry!

Accessorize Your Clothes

This is by far my favorite way to accessorize my outfit. When you purchase clothing with minor embellishments; such as a built-in belt, larger buttons, or a prominent collar, you’re already on the right track to not needing extra jewelry. The goal is to have the eye track towards your statement piece and not be overwhelmed by too many competing items. It also makes your life easier by not having to worry about dressing up these articles of clothing because they are already fabulous!

As you can see in my outfit here I took a very simple black outfit, head to toe, and chose my items wisely. Instead of throwing on my plain black blazer, I opted for my pearl embordered collar jacket. For my shoes, I chose a pair with a few gemstones. For my beret, instead of my plain grey, I chose one with a little more glitz and glam.

Now before you go into your closet and start putting all of your pre-accessorized items together in an outfit, you want to make sure you have a sense of cohesiveness. Notice in my outfit the embellishments are either pearls or gemstones. Choosing items that are similar in style is key. It gives you more of a polished and clean look. Avoid competing patterns or accessories.

Work Your Hair

Depending on the day, I don’t feel like wearing statement earrings or a layered necklace. However, I still want my outfit to look complete and not dull or boring. The best way to work around this is to utilize your most versatile accessory, your hair! I preach all the time that your hair is your most precious and important accessory to utilize! Instead of putting it up in a sleek bun, try letting it loose! Try adding some volume spray and running your ringlets through a curling iron. By simply letting your hair down, you’re allowing the eye to focus on something even more glamorous than jewelry! You won’t need any accessories to make a statement!

Wear Prints and Patterns

You already know my obsession with mixing and matching different prints and it can be used to make a statement! When your outfit is already busy with multiple prints and patterns, you don’t need to worry about adding jewelry to make a statement. In fact, adding jewelry would take away from your outfit! Your clothes are already making the statement! If mixing prints and patterns is a little too risky for you, ensure you have a least one article of clothing that can draw the eye to it. Whether it’s a bold blouse or a sequence blazer, you will be sure to still make a statement in whatever you are wearing.

Why Do Some People Hate Wearing Jewelry?

Personal preference

Everyone has their own set of preferences for style and fashion, and though most people love jewelry, some just don’t, for no reason other than the fact that they see no reason for the accessory or that they just have no interest in wearing jewelry.

Think of it this way, some people believe in specific things, and others believe in other things.

This is the same case with jewelry, too, with some people thinking of the jewelry as a status symbol and others not thinking much about it.

At the end of the day, we can all agree that we don’t always have to get our ears pierced or wear jewelry if we don’t want to. So, if you don’t want to wear jewelry, don’t.

Allergies

Some people don’t wear jewelry because they are allergic to jewelry, and despite trying different types of jewelry, the allergic reactions suffered in the past have fully put a nip in it, and they no longer wear the jewelry.

If you are allergic to gold, silver, copper, nickel, or stainless steel, you may be tired of it and just stopped wearing the jewelry or just started to hate wearing jewelry. Once you’ve suffered through a skin allergy or an irritation that got worse or even got you to the hospital, you may have developed a hate relationship with the jewelry, meaning you no longer have to or want to wear the jewelry.

Besides allergies, some kinds of jewelry cause staining of the fingers or all areas of the skin in contact with the jewelry. This is common when the jewelry is made of copper or traces of copper, and the jewelry may also stain the clothes you wear. After some time and too many tries, even with hypoallergenic jewelry, you may give up on wearing the jewelry completely.

Can’t afford the jewelry

Humanity is flawed, and it’s funny how we assume that just because most people wear jewelry, then everyone must also wear jewelry, and yet, not everyone can afford to buy jewelry – not even what you consider dirt-cheap fashion jewelry.

Most people who cannot afford to buy jewelry or couldn’t afford to buy jewelry growing up may end up hating jewelry because of what it represents.

But in most cases, people who hate jewelry because they cannot currently afford it end up spending a good chunk on good jewelry later on. But it’s not the case for everyone, not all the time.

Sensory Sensitivities

If you have sensory sensitivity issues and end up, it is highly likely that you will never wear jewelry, and if you try, you just might end up hating it because of how it makes you feel. Some people have sensory disorders, and the physical sensations of metals on their bodies don’t feel all that great. In such scenarios, the idea of jewelry is something that anyone would shun or even hate.

Discomfort

On the same note, some people just feel uncomfortable wearing jewelry, especially the big or flashy pieces, and they’d rather stick with the subtle and small hoops and studs rather than the bigger and bolder pieces.

Think of it this way; some people dislike heavy earrings and bold or long necklaces; others love it. At the end of the day, it’s just a matter of preference, and we all get to choose what we are comfortable in and what we are not.

Aesthetics

Jewelry is marketed as the perfect accessory that accentuates your appearance with minimal effort and that you just need to find the right kind of jewelry.

While this is true for many people, not everyone feels like the jewelry accentuates their appearance, and they are perfectly okay without jewelry.

Such individuals end up hating the idea of wearing jewelry because of the imposed belief that wearing jewelry is a thing that you must do to look great.

Yet, we all know that this isn’t always the case because people have and are into different aesthetics.

Safety

Some people believe that jewelry, especially the expensive kind, is too valuable to be purchased because there is a risk of losing the jewelry or that the expensive gems may be stolen. In such cases, especially for individuals who believe in investing only in good quality pieces of jewelry, buying jewelry is not a worthy option because the jewelry may be stolen.

For others, how they were raised has had an influence on their current lifestyles. In most cases, individuals raised outdoors, on the farm, or in the woods don’t really wear jewelry because the jewelry gets in the way. Sometimes, the earrings and necklaces get in the way, and even if not in what you are doing, the earrings or necklaces could end up tangled in the hair.

It gets in the way

We are all different and what some people find comfortable and stylish is something that gets in the way for others. Take rings, for example; although some men and women love rings, whether, from weddings or engagements, other people just find the rings to be annoying.

If you fidget a lot with the ring on, then you may end up hating the jewelry.
