Piercing age requirements

Age requirements for ear and body piercing vary across states in Australia. Every piercing client in WA, SA, VIC & NSW, regardless of age, must bring a form of Photo Identification to their appointment. In QLD, you can get pierced on any part of the ear and most parts of the body without providing Photo Identification.

Age requirements and consent for piercings (includes Children’s Double Operator Ear Piercing):

WA

If you are under 16: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) with a parent present on the day to provide their Photo Identification and a Medicare card with both the child and parent name on the card.

If you are over 16, but under 18: You can have anywhere on your ear pierced, including lobes, helix, conch, tragus etc., if you provide your Photo Identification.

You can be pierced on any part of the body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) with a parent present on the day to provide their Photo Identification and a Medicare card with both the child and parent name on the card.

If you are over 18: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body if you provide Photo Identification.

SA

If you are under 16: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) with a parent present on the day to provide their Photo Identification and a Medicare card with both the child and parent name on the card.

If you are over 16, but under 18: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) if you provide Photo Identification.

VIC

If you are under 16: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) with a parent present on the day to provide their Photo Identification and a Medicare card with both the child and parent name on the card.

If you are over 16, but under 18: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) if you provide Photo Identification.

QLD

You can be pierced at any age, on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) by signing a consent form, you are not required to provide Photo Identification.

You must be over 18 to get a nipple, genital or dermal piercing, and will be asked to provide Photo Identification.

NSW

If you are under 16: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding nipple, genital and dermal piercings) with a parent present on the day to provide their Photo Identification and a Medicare card with both the child and parent name on the card.

If you are over 16, but under 18: You can be pierced on any part of the ear or body (excluding genital and dermal piercings) if you provide Photo Identification. If you are over 16 you can get a nipple piercing if you provide Photo Identification.

Legal guardians can also provide consent:

The legal guardian needs to produce a guardianship order/court order together with an ID of the child (birth certificate or passport) to confirm the child’s name is the same child named in the guardianship order. The legal guardian needs to also provide their Photo Identification to confirm they are the nominated legal guardian named on the guardianship order/court order.

Age Requirements for Nipple & Genital Piercings:

You can get your genitalia or nipples pierced in WA, SA, VIC or QLD if you are over 18 years of age and provide Photo Identification.

In NSW, you can get your nipples pierced if you are over 16 and provide Photo Identification, however, you must be over 18 years of age and provide Photo Identification to have your genitalia pierced.
