What is a Snake Bites Piercing?

The bottom lip is punctured twice on opposite sides for a snake bites piercing. The name of this piercing came about because the setup looks similar to the indentation of a snake’s bite.

Snake bites piercings are usually worn with either studs, rings or curved barbells.

Angel bites piercings are the opposite version of snake bites on the top lip.

Should You get a Snake Bites Piercing?

Any piercing has inherent risks to consider before moving forward. Consider the following pros & cons:

Pros:

  • Snake bites are unisex piercings that look alluring on all genders. Despite being worn by many women, they can be worn by anyone for personal style.
  • These piercings highlight the lips and facial symmetry when pierced correctly.

Cons:

  • Snake bites are not very easy to hide. Clear retainers are available to switch out after healing, but your new piercings will be very obvious until then.
  • Lip swelling can be an issue depending on how your body reacts, and you may not be able to get both piercings at once. Make sure to find a reputable piercer and talk to them about all of your concerns beforehand.

Piercing Procedure

Upon arrival, your piercer will discuss the details of your piercings and the overall process. This is the time to ask any lingering questions you may have. They will then glove up and set up their area so that everything is clean and ready for the procedure.

Your piercer will clean the locations of your piercings and mark them with a surgical pen. Make sure you are happy with these before moving forward! Upon approval, your piercer will clamp your bottom lip and push the needle through your lip. The last step is changing out the hollow needle with your jewelry.

The videos below will give you an idea of the procedure in real time.

Snake bites piercings are rated at a 5/10 on the pain scale. Lip piercings are lower on the pain scale since facial skin is thinner than cartilage. However, snake bites are ranked higher than some other piercings because two punctures are required.

While the piercing procedure is easy, your lip may be sore and swollen for the first few days. The pain and discomfort associated with the procedure and healing will be different for everyone, but this ranking gives a general idea of what to expect.

Try to stay relaxed and positive during your procedure to minimize discomfort, and be sure to follow the aftercare instructions that your piercer gives you.

Healing and Aftercare

The primary healing time for snake bites piercings is anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Full healing usually takes anywhere from 6 to 12 months depending on proper aftercare and individual healing time.

  1. Maintain solid oral hygiene. Be careful when brushing, and rinse with a non-alcoholic mouth wash after eating or drinking.
  2. Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercings. Do not play with them or twist them around.
  3. Use ice cubes or sanitized ice packs to help with swelling. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can also be taken to decrease irritation.
  4. Do not attempt to switch out your jewelry until your piercings are completely healed. This can cause infection or piercing closure if done too early.
  5. Be sure to clean your piercings twice per day. Clean the outside with saline solution and the inside with non-alcoholic mouthwash. Diligent cleaning helps reduce healing time.

To make your own saline solution, combine 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt with 8 oz of warm water. Mix it until the salt is dissolved and pour some onto a clean pad or towel. Hold the towel on your piercings for a few minutes to loosen up any debris that may be on your jewelry. Wipe any debris away and gently clean the area without jostling the jewelry around. Continue this procedure once in the morning and once at night to ensure your piercings stay clean throughout the day.

Things to Avoid During Healing

Certain lifestyle habits can cause complications. Be sure to avoid the following during the initial healing phase:

  • Do not use harsh chemicals like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean your piercings. This will only cause irritation.
  • Limit or stop smoking since it can cause further issues during healing.
  • Do not swim in public swimming pools or natural bodies of water. Bacteria can enter your piercings and cause serious problems.
  • Do not remove or change your jewelry before initial healing is completed.
  • Avoid oral contact. This can move the jewelry and irritate the piercings.
  • Avoid touching your jewelry with dirty hands, clothes, cell phones or pillows.

Snake Bites Piercing Risks

All piercings come with potential risks, and snake bites are no different.

The most common risks for snake bites piercings are infections and possible dental damage.

Jewelry that is too big or small can scrape teeth, wear away gums or cause the formation of a lip piercing bump. Make sure to stay in touch with your piercer or doctor if you have any complications.

If you experience excess swelling, pain or bleeding, contact your piercer or doctor. Be sure to stick to the aftercare instructions above to avoid potential issues.

Best Jewelry for Snake Bites

Jewelry for snake bites should be chosen carefully since it will be inside your mouth. Discuss size & shape options with your piercer to avoid prolonged irritation or jewelry rejection.

Labrets are usually chosen as initial piercing jewelry since they stay put and are not as prone to movement. Titanium labrets are ideal since they don’t cause allergic reactions.

You can change out your jewelry after your healing period is complete. Try out dainty studs, gold rings or circular barbells and see which look you like best! The photos below will help give a better idea of different jewelry types.
