What is a Snug Piercing?

A snug piercing is a horizontal puncture through the inner ridge of the ear cartilage. This piercing is located above the anti-tragus area, and the exact location may vary depending on your individual ear structure.

Should You get a Snug Piercing?

As with any piercing, snug piercings come with both risks and rewards. Review the following pros and cons to see if a snug piercing is right for you:

Pros

  • Snug piercings are highly visible because of their placement on the ear. This piercing will be a flashy addition to any piercing combination. Double snug piercings are optional for even more attention!
  • There is no shortage of jewelry options for the snug piercing. Curved barbells come in all sizes, colors and materials to suit your mood, and rings or straight barbells might be an option depending on your ear structure.

Cons

  • The location of your piercing may vary depending on the shape of your ear ridge. This means you would most likely get a variation of the snug piercing located higher or lower on your ridge. The best way to avoid issues is to be flexible on the location of your piercing.
  • Inner ear cartilage is an extremely sensitive part of the ear. Snug piercings are ranked as highly painful, so make sure to choose an experienced piercer. This will ensure that your piercing procedure goes as smoothly and painlessly as possible.

Snug Piercing Procedure

After finding a reputable piercer, here’s what to expect when you head to the shop:

  1. Your piercer will go over the procedure with you when you arrive at your appointment. After signing some paperwork, your piercer will set up their area to ensure a sanitary procedure.
  2. Your ear will be cleaned in preparation, and the location of your piercing will be marked with a surgical pen. Make sure you are happy with this location before moving forward!
  3. Your piercer will clamp the marked area and quickly puncture your cartilage with a clean needle.
  4. Your chosen jewelry will then be swapped out through the hollow needle.
  5. Afterwards, your piercer will check-in with you about the best ways to take care of your piercing during healing. Make sure to bring up any concerns before heading out.

How Much do Snug Piercings Hurt?

7 out of 10

Snug piercings rank at a 7/10 on the pain scale. The inner cartilage of the ear is thick & more sensitive than other ear cartilage, meaning that a snug piercing is one of the most painful piercings you can get.

It’s important to remember that pain level is relative to your specific pain threshold, and this rating is only a guideline. Everyone’s experience will be different. However, deep breathing & staying calm can help to reduce the intensity of pain in the moment.

Healing and Aftercare

Be sure to follow proper aftercare guidelines to speed up healing & avoid infection. Some of the following tips will help get you started:

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
  • Change your pillowcase often & try to sleep on your opposite side while your snug piercing is healing. Keep your phone away from your ear to avoid contamination.
  • Do not move or play with your piercing. This is like peeling off a scab during healing and can cause piercing bumps.
  • Clean your piercing twice per day using a warm saline solution. Be gentle and try not to move your jewelry around during cleaning.

Make your own saline solution at home by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in 8 oz of warm water. Pour some saline wash on a clean pad or towel and hold it on your piercing for a few minutes. This will help loosen up any debris on the outside of your piercing. Gently remove the debris and clean your jewelry off. Repeat this once in the morning and once at night to ensure your piercing stays clean throughout the day.

With proper aftercare, snug piercings take anywhere from 3 to 9 months to completely heal.
