Top 5 Shoes for Spring 2011

Spring/Summer 2011 is going to be a fabulous season for fashion, and the shoes are uber-gorgeous to match. We’ve seen fringes and tassels, velvet and crazy animal prints, straps and studs and cut-outs and even mirrors on the latest shoe collections.

Most of the big name designers had some truly unique offerings in the shoe department this season, the perfect foil to the glamorous and feminine spring lines. Alexander McQueen’s collection of whimsical designs took center stage, with its butterflies, ears of corn and other   unusual accoutrements. Prada showcased some amazing sporty wedges, Chanel had velvet wedges to die for, and everywhere there were leopard print platform heels and sky-high python stilettos.

Here are our choices for the top five shoes of the season:

1. The biker bootie

We are loving the biker chic look this spring – not all black leather and studs, but biker jackets in silvers and greys, sleeves with buckle detailing, and of course, motorcycle boots. These gorgeous leather peep-toe booties from the Altuzarra Spring collection tick all the boxes – unusual color, buckle detailing, and piles of attitude. What’s not to love?

2. The tasselled sandal

One of the biggest trends for spring/summer is tassels, and where better to wear them than on our ankles? Christian Dior showed some go-o-orgeous rope sandals topped off with adorable miniature tassels this season. In a wear-with-everything shade of ivory, we’re sure these sandals would see us comfortably through all the hot-weather parties this year.

3. The clog

Ok, so clogs are not one of those universally loved shoe styles, but they are back this season, and big names like Louis Vuitton and Chanel have planted their flags firmly in clog territory this Spring. Both design houses showcased high-heeled clogs with traditional wooden soles but unusual uppers, like this Chanel clog with a studded linen upper. It’s the perfect foil for the airy sheer dresses and flouncy skirts of Spring.

4. The kitten heel

With the 60s becoming one of the dominant influences of fashion this season, how could we not acknowledge the importance of the kitten heel? Sexy and girly and perfect from day to night, a cute pair of kitten heels like these Stella McCartney animal print ones should be on every girl’s wish list.

5. The gladiator

The gladiator is back for 2011! But this staple style has had a facelift, no longer restricted to the typical brown, tan and black leather styles we’ve been seeing for so long. The 2011 glad, as shown by Lanvin, Michael Kors and Sonia Rykiel (below) is more natural and fluid, with soft fabric styling, ruching or draping. The colors are new too – rich reds, burnt oranges, soft pinks… the look is ultimately glamorous with a twist of flamboyance.
