FEATURES
“Stainless” steel is actually a generic term referring to a variety of steel types. Like all other kinds of steel, people make stainless steel primarily from iron and carbon in a two-step process. What makes stainless steel different is the addition of chromium (Cr) and other alloying elements such as nickel (Ni) to create a corrosion-resistant product.
IDENTIFICATION
Stainless steel is typically marked with a pair of numbers. These numbers refer to the amounts of chromium and nickel in the steel. For example, a stainless steel ring marked with the numbers “20/12” contains 20 percent chromium and 12 percent nickel. The higher the numbers are, the more resistant the steel is to rust and corrosion.
BENEFITS
Stainless steel jewelry is strong, durable and rust-resistant. It typically has a silver sheen, but unlike silver, it will not corrode and it is not susceptible to scratches, dings or dents. Stainless steel can be used to make nearly any type of jewelry, from rings and bracelets, watches and earrings.
COST
Some of the primary disadvantages include its, high cost, especially when considered as the initial expense. When attempting to fabricate stainless steel without using the highest technology machines and proper techniques, it can be a difficult metal to handle. This can often result in costly waste and re-work.
