What You Ought to Know About Wearing Jewelry to the Beach

Thinking about wearing jewelry to the beach? Before you soak up the sun and dive into the waters, be sure to read this guide!

Fashion and style are always changing and even though it was unfashionable to wear jewelry to the beach a few years ago, in 2021, it’s quite stylish and even recommended.

Dozens of fashion bloggers, and celebrities, like Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid, have been spotted wearing jewelry on the beach, which gives the green light for us to start doing the same.

But wearing jewelry at the beach isn’t the same as wearing it anywhere else. You need to be extra careful with certain jewelry items on the beach, in the sand, and the saltwater. Read on to see which pieces are suitable for the beach and which aren’t.

Sand Can Be Abrasive To Certain Metals

Remember that sand is made up of silica and that its rough texture can be quite abrasive and degrading to certain softer metals. For example, if you are wearing something made of diamonds which is pretty tough, beach sand won’t matter as much.

With something like citrine, or amethyst, which is softer, the sand can be quite harmful to it.

The same idea applies to solid gold, solid silver, or solid anything – they are hard enough to not be affected by the abrasive nature of sand too much.

But a gold plated, or rhodium-plated, or vermeil jewelry is quite soft and will be worn off by the sand.

Avoid wearing all the softer and plated pieces of jewelry and stick to harder and solid metal jewelry pieces that you might have.

Salt Water Can Be Harmful To Your Jewelry

Rose gold jewelry has copper in it, so avoid wearing it to the beach, because the copper will react with the saltwater and start wearing down. It will have a long-term effect on your rose gold jewelry.

Salt air will also rust any jewelry that is made of iron, or steel. And with pieces made from wood, coral, or turquoise, they will absorb the sea salt air and eventually rot.

They might look good when you are wearing them on the beach, but you are only reducing their lifespan by exposing them to the saltwater and the salt air.

Remember That Your Fingers Shrink in the Cold Water

One big no-no is to avoid wearing any expensive rings on the beach, especially your diamond engagement ring.

Remember that your fingers will shrink in the salty cold ocean water, due to the process of diuresis (the saltwater pulls water out of the skin). This is dangerous for any rings that you might have no.

They might slip away into the depths of the ocean without you even noticing that they are gone. You will never be able to get them back again.

Avoid all rings on the beach, but bracelets or necklaces are fine, as they won’t slip off as easily.

Careful of Tan Lines – No Chunky Jewelry on the Beach

Too many women forget about tan lines and the like and wear chunky jewelry to the beach. If you are wearing a chunky necklace or bracelet, it’s going to leave behind weird chunky tan lines on your skin.

In general, focus on dainty, delicate jewelry for the beach. Charming delicate pieces of jewelry are hot right now, so it won’t be hard to find something to suit your style and needs.

Also, try adding in cute little charms, like silver seashells, or conch shells into your jewelry mix. That will give it a hint of a bohemian beachy vibe, that will take your style to that next level.

Experiment with different styles to see which one resonates with you, but leave your chunky jewelry pieces for a bold fashion statement at a pool party.

Clean Your Jewelry Properly After Coming Back Home From the Beach

The most important thing to remember is that you need to clean your jewelry properly after you come back from the beach. Use a clean damp cotton cloth.

Do this after every beach day. It’s easy to avoid this step, especially if you have had a long day out and you want to fall into bed. But with this step, you will ensure that you keep your jewelry going for a long time to come.

Try Solid Hoops and Anklets Made of Platinum or Gold

Wearing jewelry at the beach? Keep it simple. Use solid metals like gold or platinum, and choose pieces that are dainty and delicate.

For rings, avoid the engagement rings, and anything you would be afraid to lose. Stack those rings, if you are going to wear them.

For earrings, go with solid hoops in funky creative colors, and materials, like resin.

Sterling silver anklets are also in, which means you can wear something simple on your ankles to give your beach fashion that needed oomph.

If you really wish to wear gold bangles, you can, but remember to avoid contact with the sand – no building sandcastles with those gold bangles jingling on your wrists.

This way you will be able to stay style-savvy and be able to wear jewelry that will not be affected too much by the saltwater or the salt air, or your sweat.

Chemical reactions begone!

Final tip: If you are going to be staying at a resort by the ocean for a week or two, then store your jewelry in a cool, dry place that’s well-ventilated. Do not store them in Ziploc bags, as that makes it worse because the jewelry can’t breathe.

Wearing Jewelry on the Beach Is No Longer a Faux-Pas

If you have been waiting for the day when wearing jewelry on the beach would no longer be a fashion no-no, then your day has come.

All those pieces of dainty solid gold or platinum pieces can come out from hiding, and sparkle in the sun yet again. Hallelujah!
