When To Wear French Cuff Dress Shirts – Man’s Guide Wearing French Cuffs – French Cuffs

Hi! I’m Antonio Centeno, the founder of Real Men Real Style. Today, I’m going to be answering the question, “When should a man wear a French cuff shirt?”

Okay. This question came through our Men’s Style Q&A website and I’ve got the link right down there, and this is a website in which you can go and ask questions, and myself or someone that works with me or someone random on the web who just wants to be helpful and knows quite a bit about men’s style — in fact, I’ve been very impressed with the men who have been coming in there and offering up answers, and it’s going to be a lot quicker than me answering the comments, especially in older videos. I don’t check older videos. I try to stay up on the comments on these new videos, but go check out the website. Again, the link is right below.

Okay, so the question, when should a man wear French cuffs? Well, a lot of confusion is out there because it’s not something we see in everyday wear. And the quick answer, by the way, is whenever you want.

I know that’s like not super helpful for many of you, but it’s the truth. I have many clients who all of the dress shirts I make for them are French cuff, so they’re basically wearing it every day, whether or not they’re going out to a bar on a Friday night or whether or not they’re going to work on a Monday morning. And for them, it’s an expression of style.

They have a good collection of cuff links and these shirts enable them to dress up without, in a sense, overdressing, so they’re not even having to always pair it with a jacket. They can go out and they’ve got this bit of jewelry, this bit of detail, which is one of their personal signatures. Now, that’s probably not going to be for every guy.

By the way, most of you are going to probably see this if you ever have to wear black tie. If you’re watching this video and you’re wearing white tie at some point, then yeah, you’re well beyond most people when it comes to style in terms of that’s really old school and you’ve got to be hanging out in different spheres of influence to be wearing white tie. Go check out the Gentleman’s Gazette. He talks a lot about white tie and black tie, so I’m not really going to go down that route.

Instead, I’m going to continue to talk about French cuffs more for, I would say, the average Joe. So this is something he’s only going to see on really high-end shirts, unless you end up going custom, then like I said, you can get them on all of your shirts. But to, again, hit on that point, you can wear it whenever you want.

I personally see it as it’s interchangeable with the barrel cuff. It’s a bit of a bigger cuff, so you’ll have to be careful. I think one of the gentlemen in my Men’s Style Q&A website, he did mention that if you’re going to wear a sweater over that shirt that you probably don’t want to have French cuffs because it’s just simply going to be — there’s going to be too much material there. In addition, if you think that you’ll be in a situation which you’ll need to roll up your cuffs, you’re not going to want to wear a French cuff shirt. It’s just going to be too much material there.

Let me go ahead and talk quickly about what some of the guys are saying in there. They’ve brought up some great points, so I don’t want to steal their points. Now, Geoffrey, he said that, “A French cuff dress shirt actually follows the same rules and could be worn in the same places as a more typical buttoning barrel cuff shirt.” I completely agree. Geoffrey nailed it there. He also said, “Of course, they do look different, so be prepared to have a little bit of attention drawn to yourself.”

I think that’s a good thing. I think it’s was Nudie Cohn that said it’s better to be looked over than overlooked. Well, Nudie Cohn also dressed people in the Rhinestone Cowboy Movement. I’m not going to get into that stuff, but the point is, gentlemen, it’s good when a man has certain things that he brings into his wardrobe which are unique to him and matches his personality and his personal style.

Now, Keith, he added that, “Cuff links are a way that a man has of personalizing his wardrobe,” which I hit on as well. “Go to an antique shop.” He makes a good point. Keith talks about going to antique shops and finding older cuff links. A lot of them are made of higher quality. They use metals like gold, silver, platinum. And when they start using metals like that, you’re going to find that they really go up in prices. This is where cuff links go from being just a functional little piece to actually being jewelry.

So on the lower end, you can find little silk knots for a couple dollars each. On the higher end, you’re going to find items in platinum and gold that are going to be in the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, so a lot open leeway there.

To get back to the question, when to wear French cuff shirts, again, whenever you want, whenever you want to introduce a bit of style to your every day wardrobe.
