Why a salt bath for your piercings

Of course, the aftercare of your new piercing is extremely important. Good aftercare allows faster healing, prevents problems and allows you to enjoy your piercing optimally. An important subtype of the basic aftercare is the salt bath. What is it and why is it so good for your piercing wound?

Salt (and minerals) for your piercing wound

The big question that arises is naturally why? Why is a salt bath so good for your wound? Salt helps the healing process and fights infections. Many animals (we as well) have a salt depot under the skin. When the skin is damaged and an inflamed wound is created, the salt clusters together and the generation of macrophages is activated. Macrophages are cells that help to fight infections.

Do you just have to spread a kilo of salt over every wound? Of course not, salt is only salutary when it is used in small quantities for the body. However, there is more. Not every type of salt is equally effective. The kitchen salt (the small white grains everyone uses while cooking) is different from sea salt. Even though kitchen salt already has a positive effect, sea salt is even better.

Many types of sea salt contain minerals so that the healing process is improved even more. You can buy sea salt in most shops and you can recognize it by its big coarse grains.

When you dissolve (sea)salt in water and let it come in touch with the wound, an extra quantity of salt is released which increases the generation of macrophages even further.

However, always keep in mind, that the salt bath is a health aid and no wonder cure. If you have doubts about your piercing, always contact your piercer or family doctor.
