Basic need to know information on the labret

Piercings come in many shapes and sizes. Being informed before getting a piercing is crucial, however if you already have a piercing then it is always useful to get some further information. Now we will talk about the labret.

The word labret is derived from the Latin word ‘labrum’ which is translated as lip, while this implies that the labret piercing is for the lip is it not only used for the lip. There are several options in terms of where you can put the labret piercing, the name labret is an umbrella term for multiple piercings. Below are the three most popular types and position of labrets.

The labret: this is a classic and mostly is worn as ear piercings or in the lip.

The medusa: This type is placed between the nose and upper lip, seen horizontally and exactly in the middle.

The Monroe: this type of piercing is also placed between the nose and the upper lip, but then on the left or right corner of the upper lip. This type is of piercing is meant to resemble the beauty spot.

With a combination of the 3 three types of piercings, there are numerous possibilities. Its common to pierce two shots in order to get something called a ‘bite’. For example ‘spider bites’, ‘angel bites’ and many other species. This is up to your own creativity; there are a number of possibilities.

The labret

The labret piercings are very attractive however some risks are involved. Because it’s a piercing which lies on the edge of your gums it can sometimes cause irritation when the labret is not handled properly.  However do not worry, this risk is very limited as long as your follow the right precautions.

Firstly, it is important that the piercing is positioned in the correct place. Make sure when you are going to pierce your skin you know the correct place to do so, a professional piercer should understand this.

Secondly, the type of material can make a lot of difference. Logically a steel piercing rubs slightly harder than a bio-flex piercing. Since the bio-flex is a softer material is reduces the chance of irritation. This is not to say that steel is not recommended but rather that bio-flex is a softer material and therefore, is more advisable.

Thirdly, the effect of the piercing on the individual. The most popular piercing type is the ball closure rings and the barbell. The barbell can cause the most irritation because it originally has two balls. The inner ball can be pushed against the teeth or gums which often causes irritation.

Piercing Mania has a category for single flat back labret piercings. With a flat plate instead of a ball you reduce not only the risk of rubbing and irritation but it also makes it a lot more comfortable to wear.

As with all piercings, once you get signs of irritation of the gums including aches and discomfort, do not ignore it but seek professional help in order to get advice.
