What is a Daith Piercing?

Daith piercings are cartilage piercings located in the central part of the outer ear, right in front of the ear canal. These piercings look especially flashy with gemmed clickers or funky-shaped jewelry.

Daith piercings have been tentatively prescribed by the Cleveland Clinic as a “highly unconventional remedy” to stop migraines. However, there is no scientific research to back up this claim, so the possible pain relief may also be explained by the placebo effect.

These piercings not only offer a unique look, they could also help with health issues!

Daith Piercing Procedure

According professional piercers, daith piercings are one of the simplest piercing procedures to perform. However, you should always make sure you are being pierced by a trusted professional. Piercing yourself at home or having a friend pierce you can lead to serious complications. There’s no need to worry as long as you trust your piercer and are honest about your health.

Your piercer will ask you the following questions before proceeding with your piercing:

  • How is your overall health?
  • Do you have any health conditions to be concerned about?
  • Do you have any contraindications to piercing at the moment?

This is the time to be very honest with your piercer, since withholding health information can cause serious problems down the road. You can ask to speak privately with your piercer if this is a concern.

  • Your next step is choosing the appropriate jewelry for your daith piercing. Let your piercer advise you on what size and style of jewelry they think is best for healing. You can always change it after the healing period is over!
  • Your jewelry and instruments will be autoclaved (sterilized) before moving forward with your piercing.

Once everything is prepared, you will officially start the piercing procedure:

  • Your piercer will disinfect your ear to ensure there’s no outside contamination.
  • They will then mark your piercing location with a surgical marker to stay precise.
  • Afterwards, your piercer will puncture the necessary cartilage from top to bottom so the marks line up.
  • Your jewelry is then inserted through the needle, and the area is cleaned up with antiseptic.

And there you have it, your new daith piercing!

While daith piercings aren’t exactly easy, they are nowhere near the most painful piercing. Most people rated this piercing between a five and a six on the pain scale.

Learn which piercings hurt the most and least with this handy chart.

It is normal to feel intense, sharp pain during your piercing procedure. This pain shouldn’t last more than a couple seconds. Afterwards, you’ll still feel a reasonable amount of discomfort that will slowly decrease over the next few days.

Keep in mind that each person is unique in their pain tolerance, and sensitivities can vary dramatically. Certain factors like pain threshold, expertise of your piercer, which piercing you’re getting and your state of mind can affect how much pain you feel while getting pierced.

However, the most important part of any fresh piercing is proper healing and aftercare, which your piercer will discuss with you once your piercing is done.

Healing Time

Daith piercing initial healing usually takes 2-3 weeks.

Many daith piercings are mostly back to normal after 2-3 weeks of thorough aftercare. Healing could take as long as 5-9 months in the rare case that complications arise from irritation or improper procedure.

See the video below for more details.

Aftercare

Committing to proper aftercare technique can allow fresh piercings to heal faster. Follow these aftercare guidelines for a happy and healthy piercing:

  • Make a DIY saline solution using 1 gallon distilled water & 4 tablespoons of sea salt. Clean your piercing with this solution twice per day, preferably before bed and when you wake up.
  • Change your pillowcase frequently. Your hair and face carry bacteria that can easily infect your piercing, and it’s important to avoid this at all costs.
  • Avoid using hair products that will irritate your daith piercing.
  • Avoid sleeping on your piercing as this will prolong healing and cause irritation.
  • Take B-complex vitamins to help speed up healing.
  • Do not touch, spin or move your jewelry. Your piercing is like a scab, and moving your jewelry around essentially tears your scab off.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience redness, swelling or infection.
