Acrylic body jewellery we known that piercings are supplied in many kinds of materials and acrylic is one of those materials that regularly comes up! Acrylic is used in particular for the decoration, screw-on balls and charms so it can never hurt to have some extra information on this material!
Polyacrylonitrile
Acrylic of course has a more technical definition, called Polymethyl methacrylate that is known in short as PMMA. However is can be commonly referred to as Plexiglass and Perspex. At Piercingmania this material is referred to as acrylic or UV acrylic. This is because that raw acrylic has 90% of light transmission which is even more than ordinary glass, but blocks Ultra Violet radiation.
Acrylic is an easy to work with material. When heated up to 150 degrees Celsius it can simply be poured into its final shape. This makes the production process easier and therefore costs less to make. This is why acrylic piercing are cheaper then let’s say steel.
Please note: Because acrylic materials are so easy to work with when heated they are not suitable for an autoclave*.
* An autoclave is used to heat piercings as a way of sterilisation.
