All information about the labret piercing

Piercing Mania likes to inform you properly and completely when it comes down to body jewellery. We have studied all kinds of piercing types. In this article, we will inform you about the ‘labret piercing’.

The Labret – The piercing

The word labret is derived from the latin word ‘ labrum’ which means ‘lip’. Although this suggest that this piercing is going through the lip itself, this is not always the standard. There are a lot of places where you can place a labret piercing. Below you can find the three most popular types of their place around the mouth:

– The labret: this classic and often worn type is placed between the lower lip and the chin. If you look at it horizontally, the piercing is mostly placed exactly in the center but this is not necessary.

– The Medusa piercing: this piercing type is placed between the nose and the upper lip. Horizontally seen exactly in the middle.

– The Monroe piercing: this type of piercing is also placed between the nose and the upper lip, not in the centre, but left of right above the upper lip. This type of piercing reminds people often of the ‘ beauty spot’.

With a combination of these three types, you can create many other possibilities. Many times the piercing is pierced at two places and then it’s called a ‘bite’. Think of “spider bites”, “angel bites’, ‘cyber bites’ and many other types of bites lip piercings. Your own creativity is the only limit  of the possibilities.

The Labret -The Jewel

The labret is a very nice piercing but has a risk factor as well. Because this piercing is very close to the gum line it is possible it might cause problems if you don’t take good care of it. Don’t worry, this risk is not very big if you take the right measures.

Firstly, it’s important that the piercing is pierced in the right place. If you want to get a piercing, make sure you do this at a good piercer who has understandings about it and who places your labret on the right place.

Secondly, the choice of material is very important. Logically, a piercing of surgical steel rubs more than a bio-flex piercing. Because a bio-flex piercing is softer it reduces the chance of problems. We don’t say that surgical steel is not recommended, but we’re just saying that bio-flex is a real nice material, because it’s so soft.

Thirdly, the type of piercings has influence. The most worn piercing types are the ball closure ring and the barbell. Especially the barbell piercing can cause this problem because it has two balls originally. The inner ball can rub against your teeth or gum line which is often the cause of problems.

This is why Piercing Mania has only labret piercings with a flat back in the category ‘ Labret’. With a flat plate instead of a ball, you do not only minimize the risk of rubbing, but it is also much more comfortable to wear.

As said with all piercing types, this also applies for the labret: as soon as you get signs of an irritated skin/gum line, aches of discomfort, don’t ignore it but go to a piercer or dentist for advice on how to deal with these problems.

The labret can also be worn in other places besides the lip, read all about it.
