All information about the nipple piercing

Piercing the nipple is a classic type of body jewellery. There must be only a few people who have never heard about the nipple piercing. That doesn’t mean there is nothing new to learn about the nipple piercing. Did you know if there is a minimum nipple size required to pierce a nipple? What about pregnancy and nipple piercings? Can you breastfeed with a nipple piercing?

About the nipple piercing

The nipple piercing is often seen as a non-stimulating sexual piercing, similar to the Christina piercing. Both men and women wear this sexy piercing every day. But having a nipple piercing is not the same experience for everyone. There is a lot of difference between one set of nipples and the other.

Women tend to have bigger nipples than men. When it comes to nipple piercings good news for the women. A bigger and firmer nipple is easier to pierce and to maintain. Not saying that a small nipple couldn’t be pierced, but it can handle less weight and is, therefore, more receptive for complications. This is often related to the weight of the piercing in combination with a relatively small support surface.

This means that those with small nipples have a bit less choice when selecting a new nipple piercing. A simple barbell is often the best choice.

Special nipple piercings

You could divide nipple piercings into two categories. Simple piercing barbells and nipple piercings with extra styling. This extra styling often consists of a nipple shield or a chain with some sort of pendant.

Nipple piercings with extra styling can only be worn as a nipple piercing, nowhere else. The design is based on the nipple. Take this nipple piercing with a shield for example.

Nipple piercings with a chain are also solely meant to be worn in the nipple. Most do however have the possibility to remove the chain resulting in a simple barbell. That barbell could, in theory, be used on other places.

Nipple piercings with a shield or other extra styling do come with extra weight. This could have an impact on your comfort. The smaller your nipple the bigger the impact.

A barbell as a nipple piercing

A barbell is perfectly suited to be worn as a nipple piercing. Barbells are available in a wide range of lengths and thicknesses. That makes it easy to find a barbell that you’ll find most comfortable to wear.

The standard size of a nipple piercing lies at 1.2 mm thickness with 12 or 16 mm length. That is roughly the same size as a tongue piercing with 1.6 mm thickness and 16 mm length. If you have a bigger firm nipple you could make the switch from 1.2 to 1.6 mm through which your range of available nipple piercings expands.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and nipple piercings

You’re pregnant and you have a nipple piercing. How do they interact? But before we go any further, let us give warning that a pregnancy should never be combined with getting a new piercing, any type of piercing. Your body is occupied with something entirely different then healing piercing wounds.

But what if you already have a nipple piercing? Then your breasts become a sensitive subject, literally. There happens a lot with breasts during pregnancy as they prepare to produce milk. One of the known effects is hypersensitivity of the breast, especially the nipple.

As a result, there are women who remove their nipple piercing. An understandable reaction, but you should know that your nipples can grow shut rather quickly. Nipple piercings that grew shut within a day are no exceptions. This while the hypersensitivity of the breast and nipple might just continue.

Breastfeeding with a nipple piercing is no problem at all. Despite some pierced mammary glands, they should still work perfectly fine. You should remove your jewelry, though, right before you actually start feeding!

Piercing retainers offer an easy solution. The are made of flexible bio-flex making them comfortable to wear and very easy to place and remove. They will prevent your nipple from healing shut during the whole period of breastfeeding. Once the baby is old enough you can easily but your nipple piercing back in.
