This simple guide will equip you with information on pain level, aftercare, procedure and healing time of the auricle piercing.

What is an Auricle Piercing?

Auricle piercing is a perforation on the area between the helix and earlobe on the outer ridge of the ear.

Flashy jewelry is popular for this location since the auricle is more forward-facing than some other cartilage piercings.

Should You Get an Auricle Piercing?

As with any piercing, auricle piercings are a commitment. The following pros & cons below may help answer your questions:

Pros

  • Auricle piercings are ideal for self-expression because of their location on the ear & potential jewelry options.
  • These piercings do not take as long to heal as some other cartilage piercings, and the procedure is quick.

Cons

  • Infections or piercing bumps are always a possibility, and auricle piercings are no different. A thorough aftercare routine reduces these risks.
  • Complications or allergies are more common with cheap or plated jewelry. This can be avoided by purchasing high-quality, non-reactive jewelry when you get pierced.

Auricle Piercing Procedure

First, find a reputable piercer you can trust. Experienced piercers will always be more reliable and provide a safer piercing experience.

Shop Piercing Jewelry

You’ll fill out paperwork and talk to your piercer upon arriving at the shop. They’ll outline what to expect with pain, procedure and healing so you’re fully aware of what you’re getting into.

Your piercer will then glove up, get their area ready and mark the location of your piercing with a surgical pen. Make sure you like the location before moving forward.

Then comes the puncture. Your piercer will push the needle through your ear cartilage and insert your preferred jewelry. They will discuss aftercare with you when everything is done so that you know how to take care of your healing piercing. This is the time to pay attention and ask any lingering questions you may have.

The videos below offer a real-time look at the auricle piercing procedure.

Auricle piercings rank at a 3/10 on the pain scale. They still have to perforate cartilage, so they are slightly more painful than earlobe piercings.

However, it’s important to remember this ranking is dependent on your individual pain tolerance and the technique of your piercer.

Swelling, soreness and possible bleeding will normally disappear within two weeks.

Thankfully, auricle piercings are one of the least painful piercings because of the location.

Auricle Healing and Aftercare

Despite pain reduction within 1–2 weeks after the procedure, auricle piercings can take anywhere from 3–9 months to completely heal.

Practicing the proper aftercare techniques outlined below will help avoid complications and keep your new piercing healthy:

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
  • Clean your auricle piercing twice per day to avoid complications. (see details below)
  • Do not remove your jewelry until your piercing has completely healed. This can cause piercing bumps or full closure of your new piercing.
  • Hairspray and other hair products that might interact with your piercing should be avoided within the first few weeks.
  • Avoid touching or moving your jewelry. This reduces your chances of getting ear piercing keloids.
  • Sleep on your opposite side or back to avoid putting more pressure on your healing piercing.
  • Use mild soap when rinsing your piercing in the shower.

To clean your auricle piercing, mix 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt into 8 oz of warm water. Soak a clean pad or towel with the saline solution and hold it on your piercing for a few minutes. This helps to loosen any debris and make sure it’s fully clean. Remove any debris and gently clean the jewelry ends with minimal movement. Repeat this once in the morning & once at night to keep your piercing happy and healthy.
