As society strives to look younger and cosmetic procedures become more mainstream, this raises a question which asks “What is the minimum age for beauty treatments and services?”
Given that some beauty services can be quite personal, there lies the question of what is socially and morally responsible.
Some services like Body Piercing are regulated throughout Australia.
In Western Australia, you have to be at least 18 years of age for body piercing and in Queensland you can get a piercing at any age. In the rest of the states of Australia, you have to be at least 16 years of age. In addition, there are strict guidelines on photo identification in most states and salons are required to keep accurate records to demonstrate that they have done all they can to not pierce minors.
So, what about beauty services in general like waxing, laser and IPL? There is no minimum age requirement, but again what is morally and socially responsible?
Some services like XXX Brazilian waxing are quite invasive involving waxing of the labia and in between the bottom. However, for a young girl where hair can be quite an embarrassing problem after puberty, then why can’t she have this service? If you are unsure if you are ready, try discussing your hair removal options with a parent, waxing is a great first time hair removal option as you are left hair free for longer periods of time unlike shaving – where you can have sharp stubble the next day.
There are no age requirements for laser and IPL treatment. However, we recommend starting treatments post puberty because hormonal changes during this time can affect and stimulate hair growth. If you are unsure, please consult your parent, guardian or physician.
