What is the shaving effect?

What is the shaving effect, and how does it affect my waxing results?

If you are new to waxing, have shaved in between waxes or used an epilator or depilatory creams – it will take up to 4 – 6 regular waxes for your hair growth cycle to be in sync. This is because hairs all over your body are constantly going through cycles of growth, resting and shedding.

With waxing, hairs in the growing phase will be pulled out before ever reaching the resting phases of the hair cycle, resulting in smoother skin for longer periods of time.

When commencing waxing, hairs in the growing phase will grow out long enough to be waxed, however the hairs which were in the resting stage when you shaved will stay the same, close to the surface of the skin. This is why you will notice some hairs ‘growing’ after a few days that feel like stubble.

It’s important to remember, this doesn’t mean that your Beauty Therapist did a poor job, so don’t freak out and run to another salon! This can make it seem like your wax didn’t last long, but consistency is key! Getting regular, consistent waxes will ensure all your hairs are in the growing phase when they are removed, giving you longer lasting results!

The benefits of regular waxing

Not only will you maintain your great results from having regular waxes, your hair will grow back progressively finer and sparser. This is because the wax removes the hair from the root, causing the hair follicle to get damaged and weaken each time. These finer hairs also mean there is no itchiness or prickliness as your hair is regrowing. Waxing also gently exfoliates your skin, and while it will never take the place of regular exfoliation, it can help to brighten the surface of your skin and enhance smoothness.
