Standard size of piercings

There are a lot of different piercing types, which all come in different sizes. That can be a bit confusing at times, especially if your piercing knowledge is limited. Thankfully, Piercing Mania offers a neat solution. On our piercing blog, you’ll find the most diverse blogs on all piercing related subjects. Continuing from our all information about piercings blog this article that helps you discover the standard piercing sizes.

Different piercing types and sizes

Piercings come in a variety of types like the barbell, circular barbell and ball closure ring that can be worn on a lot of different places on the body. Other piercings are explicitly meant to be worn on a certain place, like the helix shield or a nipple piercing with a shield. With the latter you know for sure that you got the right size, but what about a ball closure ring? How do you know what size you need?

That is fully dependant of the place you are going the wear the jewel. Depending on the place on your body, body jewellery is set with 0.8, 1, 1.2, or 1.6 mm thickness. The place on your body determines the thickness. The length is strongly dependant on the thickness but allows you to vary depending on the shape of your body and the exact piercing location. If you have a nose piercing that is placed relatively high for example, then you’ll need a longer ring without it getting thicker.

All piercing information

If you want to make good decisions you should know which thickness belongs to which body location and which length goes with it. That’s why Piercing Mania decided to summarise all the standards. You can find this information in the blogs series named ‘All information about the … piercing’. There you’ll find the standard lengths and thicknesses for each type and/or location.

The blog also contains a lot more general piercing information. Use it to your advantage. If you are well informed on the possibilities of body jewellery you’ll find that the number of possible body jewellery you can wear expands as well. You’ll also prevent ordering wrong piercings, or even worse, actually wearing wrong body jewellery.

Piercing knowledge prevents problems

It is not just the standard sizes that are important when deciding which piercings to wear. By knowing which type can be worn where, in which size and made from which material allows you to prevent complications. Getting the wrong jewellery can result in unnecessary problems.

Wearing body jewellery in sizes that are too small (or too big) could lead to outgrowth. Wearing surgical steel in an unhealed piercing wound could lead to a nickel allergy. By being aware what it is that you put in your body you prevent unnecessary problems. The more you know, the better.
