The barbell piercing is the most basic piercing type. It consists of a simple straight bar with a ball on either end, available in a wide range of sizes. You’ll find barbells applicable for ear piercings, tongue piercings, nipple piercings, eyebrow piercings and clit piercings. Barbell as a tongue piercing
The tongue piercing is always a barbell. A barbell of 16 mm in length and 1.6 mm thick. This size is always different when you just got pierced. The tongue swells up which creates the need for some extra length. Once healed the tongue will shrink to its original size allowing you to switch to a normal size tongue piercing.
Because barbells are so widely applicable you’ll also regularly find barbells that aren’t suited to be worn a tongue piercing. Gold plated barbells, for example, will start to wear when they’re continuously exposed to saliva and friction. The thin layer of gold will come off. The same goes for certain barbells with a coating, the coating will dissolve.
Barbells which are enriched with a lot of small crystals are also best avoided. The crystal might get loose if their glue dissolves or they might simply snap off when they bump into your teeth.
Barbell as a nipple piercing
The barbell is an excellent nipple piercing. Although there are explicit nipple piercings with striking designs, you have a lot more options if you include barbells. Most nipples require a barbell with 1.6 mm thickness and a length from 12 to 19 mm.
Barbell as an ear piercing
The ear is another place you can easily wear barbell piercings. Barbells with a size of 1.2 mm thickness and 6 mm in length can be worn in most places in the ear. At least for the ten most popular ear piercings.
It does only apply to barbells without special designs. A lot of ear barbells have some sort of pendant or special top which might make them unsuited for some places on the ear.
Barbell as eyebrow piercing or clit piercing
The eyebrow is another place where the barbell is the more common body jewellery choice. Mostly a small curved barbell of 1.6 mm thick and 8 or 10 mm long. These small barbells are often worn vertically as an eyebrow piercing.
They’re also often worn as a vertical clit piercing, but chances are you prefer 1.2 mm thick. Depending on the length the ball should rest somewhere near the clit creating extra stimuli.
