All information about the dermal piercing

Body jewellery comes in all shapes and sizes, some better known than others. You can get pierced nearly everywhere. With so many options to get pierced, it might get a bit overwhelming and confusing. Following up on ‘All information about piercings’, we’ll discuss the dermal piercing.

The dermal piercing, also known as a micro dermal, is one of the more recent developments within body jewellery. Although this piercing type already exists for a while, it’s popularity is especially increasing the last few years. Probably because the dermal piercing can be placed everywhere. Another reason could be using dermal piercings to give a tattoo a finishing touch.

Getting a dermal piercing

The dermal anchor consists of a small disk of just a few millimeters in size which placed under the skin. The skin is made of three layers; the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. A piercer will make a tiny incision of roughly 2 mm in the upper two layers. The dermal anchor is placed in this incision and should be located in between the dermis and the hypodermis.

The human body, including the skin, is designed to repel foreign objects. So it might occur that the body simply pushes out the dermal anchor. That’s why some dermal anchors have extra holes in their disk. This allows scar tissue to grow in the holes anchoring the dermal. Still, about 2 % of all dermal anchors will be fully pushed out. If that happens there is no real threat, you’ll just need to get it replaced.

For this reason, it is important to leave your dermal piercing alone. If the dermal piercing is touched too much during it’s healing time of approximately 6 to 8 weeks, it is more likely to grow out, as touching it prevents the plate from anchoring. It is normal that the dermal anchor might feel a bit sore the first few days. If it continues to feel that way you should consult your doctor or piercer. Never remove the dermal yourself!

Dermal piercing online

Some brief but important information about buying dermal anchors online. You might spot different dermal piercings as some are simply dermal tops you can place and remove yourself using the dermal anchor. But there are also dermal piercings which are partially placed under the skin. You should always contact your piercer who is going to place such body jewellery before buying them.

The advantages of a dermal piercing

There are no real disadvantages besides the regular ones when it comes to dermal piercings. But it does have its advantages.

The biggest one is that a dermal piercing can be placed anywhere on the body. Where other body jewellery needs to pierce the body, the dermal is placed in between skin layers. This makes them far more widely applicable. Do keep in mind that placing a dermal piercing requires a certain expertise and not every piercer will have that.

Another advantage is that as soon as you have an anchor you can easily replace tops. This allows you to easily change its look. It could be that you have a different anchor that isn’t compatible with our tops. That’a why you’ll also find converters which can convert your dermal anchor properly.
