A new ear piercing, the other five

Ear piercings, in general, are probably the most common type of piercing, especially including the earring. Besides the earring, the ear offers a lot of ways to get pierced. That’s why Piercing Mania made a short list of the top ten ear piercings.

The first five ear piercings were already discussed on our previous blog. They were the Anti-helix, the Vertical helix, the Scapha, the Conch and the Tragus piercing. In this second blog, we will continue with the other five. The Helix, the Rook, the Snug, the Daith and the Anti-tragus piercing.

Do you know another type of ear piercing that you think should be on this list? Or do you have another useful tip concerning ear piercing? Let us know through the comments below.

An ear full of piercings

Every ear is different and your piercer will definitely keep that in mind. That’s why the exact locations of the piercings as seen on the image below can vary slightly.

Helix piercing

The Helix piercing is, together with the Tragus piercing, the most common ear piercing. Together they have become true symbols amongst the ear piercings. The helix piercing is often set multiple times. By getting two or more directly above each other, you’ll quickly get the look of a full ear.

The helix piercing is placed through the cartilage on the edge of the ear. It shouldn’t be placed too far into the ear or it will become a Scapha piercing.

You can wear the following piercing types as a helix piercing:

Helix piercing
Tragus piercing
Labret piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring

Rook piercing

The Rook piercing is closely related to the Daith and the Snug piercing. It’s placed on the edge in the shell of the ear. The Rook is placed on the ‘folding’ that separates the inner shell from the outer shell. The Rook is sometimes perceived to give a bit more of a sting when placed because the cartilage is a bit tougher.

The can wear the following piercings in a Rook:

Tragus piercing
Helix piercing
Labret piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring

Daith piercing

The Daith piercing looks a lot like the Rook piercing and the Anti-helix, but it’s placed slightly lower. Were the Rook pierces the shell of the ear, the Daith pierces the ear where it is attached to your head. The difference with the anti-helix is that it’s placed a bit lower and nog longer goes through the outer edge of the ear.

You wear these piercings in a Daith piercing:

Tragus piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring

If you’re going to wear rings in a Daith piercing make sure they are big enough so they won’t pinch.

Snug piercing

The snug piercing only differs a bit from the anti-tragus. It’s placed a bit higher and a bit more outwards. Just like a Rook piercing it goes through the ‘ledge’ separating the outer and inner ear shells.

A snug piercing can handle the following piercings:

Tragus piercing
Labret piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring

Anti-tragus

The anti-tragus is called that way because it pierces a piece of ear that looks similar to the actual tragus. This piece of the ear is directly above the earlobe and is slightly protruding, just as the actual tragus. Not to be confused with the Snug, which is placed higher.

In an anti-tragus you can wear these piercing types:

Tragus piercing
Labret piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring
