A new ear piercing, the first five

Piercing the ear has always been very popular. Especially the regular earring, which has always been the number 1 ear piercing. But there are a whole lot of other possibilities to pierce an ear. Most will be familiar with the tragus and helix piercing, but, wat about the Conch? Or the Scapha?

That’s why Piercing Mania made two blogs covering the top ten ear piercings. Besides their location on the ear, we will also point out other important or convenient characteristics. We also made short lists for the types of piercings that can be worn in each ear piercing.

This blog will cover the first five ear piercings, the Anti-helix, the Vertical-helix, the Scpaha, the Conch and the Tragus piercing.

Ear piercing on a unique ear

Every ear is different and your piercer will definitely keep that in mind. That’s why the exact locations as shown on the image can vary slightly.

Tragus piercing

The tragus piercing is, along with the helix piercing, the most worn ear piercing. They both grew out to be true symbols amongst the ear piercings. The BBC reported in 2005 that Scarlett Johansen was spotted with a tragus piercing. A short amount of time later the number of people with a tragus piercing started to increase exponentially. The BBC even called the tragus piercing the new belly button piercing.

The tragus piercing goes through the piece of cartilage that lies directly in front of your ear canal. Getting your tragus pierced is often experienced as less painful than other ear piercings. This because the tragus contains a low amount of nerves.

The following piercings can be worn in the tragus:

  • Tragus piercing
  • Labret piercing
  • Circular barbell
  • Ball closure ring

Conch piercing

The Conch piercing is a rare piercing, so you are unlikely to spot someone with them. Quite a waste as the Conch piercing is very pretty and apparently very unique. When you do see someone with a Conch piercing they often have a double or even a tripple Conch.

The Conch consists of two subtypes, the inner conch and the outer conch. The Conch piercing shown on the image above is an inner conch, it is placed on the lowest part of the ear shell. The outer conch is placed in between the Anti-helix, Vertical-helix and the Scapha. (The higher part of the ear shell.) Getting a Conch piercing is considered evenly painful as other ear piercings.

You can wear the following piercings in a Conch piercing:

  • Tragus piercing
  • Labret piercing

Vertical Helix piercing

The Vertical helix piercing is closely related to the regular helix piercing. Where a regular helix is horizontal, the vertical helix is vertical, obviously. It’s placed around the highest part of the ear. Getting a helix piercing is shouldn’t be any more painful than any other ear piercing.

You can wear these piercing types in a helix piercing:

  • Tragus piercing
  • Helix piercing
  • Labret piercing
  • Circular barbell
  • Ball closure ring

Anti Helix piercing

The Anti Helix piercing is also related to the helix piercing. The word ‘anti’ can be read as ‘opposite’, it is placed at the opposite side of the ear. Where the ear is attached to year head. The anti helix also shouldn’t be any more painful than other ear piercings.

Just like the vertical helix piercing you can wear these piercing types:

  • Tragus piercing
  • Helix piercing
  • Labret piercing
  • Circular barbell
  • Ball closure ring

Scapha piercing

If the Anti and Vertical Helix are related to the helix piercing, the Scapha can be seen as its twin, they are almost identical. The only difference is that the Scapha is placed further away from the edge of the ear. This creates a different look as the piercing lies more onto the shell rather than the edge. It shouldn’t be placed too far, then it would be a Conch piercing. Getting a Scapha piercing, once again, shouldn’t be any more painful than any other piercing type.

The Scapha piercing is suited for these piercing types:

Tragus piercing
Helix piercing
Labret piercing
Circular barbell
Ball closure ring

If you’re going to wear rings, it is important to keep the distance to the edge of your ear in mind. If the ring is only slightly too small it will squeeze into the edge of your ear.
